Diretrizes para Autores

INSTRUÇÕES AOS AUTORES

São aceitos manuscritos preferencialmente no idioma inglês e resumos em português e inglês. O texto de manuscrito de pesquisa original deve seguir a estrutura conhecida como IMRD: Introdução, Métodos, Resultados e Discussão (Estrutura do Texto). Manuscritos baseados em pesquisa qualitativa podem ter outros formatos, admitindo-se Resultados e Discussão em uma mesma seção e Considerações Finais ou Conclusões. Outras categorias de manuscritos (estudo de revisões, comentário ou cartas ao editor etc.) seguem os formatos de texto a elas apropriados.

Os estudos devem ser apresentados de forma que qualquer pesquisador interessado possa reproduzir os resultados. Para isso, estimulamos o uso das seguintes recomendações, de acordo com a categoria do manuscrito submetido:

- CONSORT checklist e fluxograma para ensaios controlados e randomizados;

- PRISMA checklist e fluxograma para revisões sistemáticas e meta-análises;

- STROBE checklist para estudos observacionais em epidemiologia.

Pormenores sobre os itens exigidos para apresentação do manuscrito estão descritos de acordo com a categoria de artigos. Como forma de avaliação da ocorrência de plágio, todos os manuscritos recebidos são submetidos à programa de detecção de similaridades entre textos. O ORCID  de todos os autores deverá ser informado no momento da submissão dos manuscritos, na carta de apresentação.

FORMA E PREPARAÇÃO DOS MANUSCRITOS

Apresentação

O texto deve ser digitado em processador de texto Word ou compatível, em tamanho A4, com espaçamento de linhas e tamanho de letra que permitam plena legibilidade. O texto completo, incluindo páginas de rosto e de referências, tabelas e legendas de figuras, deve conter no máximo 25 mil caracteres com espaços.

 O texto do manuscrito deverá ser encaminhado em dois arquivos, sendo o primeiro com todas as informações solicitadas nos itens abaixo e o segundo uma cópia cega, ou seja, onde todas as informações que possam identificar os autores ou o local onde a pesquisa foi realizada devem ser excluídas.

Dados de identificação do manuscrito: Página título

Autoria: O conceito de autoria está baseado na contribuição substancial de cada uma das pessoas listadas como autores, no que se refere à concepção do projeto de pesquisa, análise e interpretação dos dados, redação e revisão crítica do manuscrito. Não se justifica a inclusão de nome de autores cuja contribuição não se enquadre nos critérios mencionados.

Título no idioma original do manuscrito: O título deve ser conciso e completo, contendo informações relevantes que possibilitem a recuperação do artigo nas bases de dados. O limite é de 90 caracteres, incluindo espaços. 

Título resumido: É o título que constará no cabeçalho do artigo. Deve conter a essência do assunto em até 45 caracteres.

Identificação dos autores e coautores: nome, sobrenome e instituição ou afiliação institucional (curso, laboratório, departamento, hospital, clínica, universidade, etc.), cidade, estado e país, conforme a ordem de autoria. ORCID de todos os autores deverá ser informado no momento da submissão dos manuscritos, na carta de apresentação.

Instituição: Podem ser incluídas até três hierarquias institucionais de afiliação (por exemplo: universidade, faculdade, departamento).

Financiamento da pesquisa: Se a pesquisa foi subvencionada, indicar o tipo de auxílio, o nome da agência financiadora e o respectivo número do processo.

Apresentação prévia: Tendo sido apresentado em reunião científica, indicar o nome do evento, local e ano da realização.

Correspondência: Deve constar o nome, e-mail e endereço do autor responsável para troca de correspondência.

Estudos com seres humanos ou animais: indicação do parecer de aprovação pelo comitê de ética; no caso de ensaio clínico, o número de registro do Registro Brasileiro de Ensaios Clínicos-REBEC (http://www.ensaiosclinicos.gov.br) ou no Clinical Trials (http://clinicaltrials.gov).

Resumo, abstract, descritores e keywords

A segunda página deve conter os resumos em português e inglês (máximo de 250 palavras). O resumo e o abstract devem ser redigidos em um único parágrafo, buscando-se o máximo de precisão e concisão; seu conteúdo deve seguir a estrutura formal do texto, ou seja, indicar objetivo, m´étodos, resultados e conclusão.

São seguidos, respectivamente, da lista de até cinco descritores e keywords (sugere-se a consulta aos DeCS – Descritores em Ciências da Saúde da Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde do Lilacs (http://decs.bvs.br) e ao MeSH – Medical Subject Headings do Medline (http://www.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/meshhome.html).

Estrutura do texto do manuscrito

Sugere-se que os trabalhos sejam organizados mediante a seguinte estrutura formal: a) Introdução – justificar a relevância do estudo frente ao estado atual em que se encontra o objeto investigado e estabelecer o objetivo do artigo;

b) Métods – descrever em detalhe a seleção da amostra, os procedimentos e materiais utilizados, de modo a permitir a reprodução dos resultados, além dos métodos usados na análise estatística;

c) Resultados – sucinta exposição factual da observação, em seqüência lógica, em geral com apoio em tabelas e gráficos. Deve-se ter o cuidado para não repetir no texto todos os dados das tabelas e/ou gráficos;

d) Discussão – comentar os achados mais importantes, discutindo os resultados alcançados comparando-os com os de estudos anteriores. Quando houver, apresentar as limitações do estudo; e) Conclusão – sumarizar os achados observados fundamentado nos resultados.

Tabelas, gráficos, quadros, figuras e diagramas

Tabelas, gráficos, quadros, figuras e diagramas são considerados elementos gráficos. Só serão aceitos no máximo cinco desses elementos. Recomenda-se especial cuidado em sua seleção e pertinência, bem como rigor e precisão nas legendas, as quais devem permitir o entendimento do elemento gráfico, sem a necessidade de consultar o texto. Note que os gráficos só se justificam para permitir rápida compreensão das variáveis complexas, e não para ilustrar, por exemplo, diferença entre duas variáveis. Todos devem ser fornecidos no final do texto, mantendo-se neste, marcas indicando os pontos de sua inserção ideal. As tabelas (títulos na parte superior) devem ser montadas no próprio processador de texto e numeradas (em arábicos) na ordem de menção no texto; decimais são separados por vírgula; eventuais abreviações devem ser explicitadas por extenso na legenda.

Figuras, gráficos, fotografias e diagramas trazem os títulos na parte inferior, devendo ser igualmente numerados (em arábicos) na ordem de inserção. Abreviações e outras informações devem ser inseridas na legenda, a seguir ao título. Qualquer figura (imagens, gráficos, fotografias e ilustrações) deve ser mencionada no texto e apresentada em tamanho maior ou igual ao tamanho pretendido para exibição (extensão JPEG ou PNG em resolução acima de 800 pixels). Se as figuras já tiverem sido publicadas, uma permissão por escrito para reprodução deve ser fornecida pelo autor/editor, e as legendas devem incluir a fonte da publicação.

Observação: Tabelas, gráficos, quadros, figuras e diagramas deverão ser submetidos em arquivos separados sem legendas as quais deverão estar no final do manuscrito.

Normativa de citação científica

É necessário que a referência seja indicada pelo seu número na listagem, na forma de expoente (sobrescrito) antes da pontuação no texto, sem uso de parênteses, colchetes ou similares. Nos casos em que a citação do nome do autor e do ano for relevante, o número da referência deve ser colocado seguido do nome do autor. Trabalhos com dois autores devem fazer referência aos dois autores ligados por “e”. Nos casos de autoria múltipla, apresentar apenas o primeiro autor, seguido de “et al.”

Referências bibliográficas

As referências (para os artigos originais serão limitadas entre 40 a 50 referências) devem ser normatizadas de acordo com o estilo Vancouver - Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals: Writing and Editing for Biomedical Publication, listadas por ordem de citação.  Os títulos de periódicos devem ser referidos de forma abreviada, de acordo com o PubMed. No caso de publicações com até seis autores, todos devem ser citados; acima de seis, devem ser citados apenas os seis primeiros, seguidos da expressão latina “et al.”. Sempre que possível, incluir o DOI do documentado citado.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR AUTHORS

Manuscripts written in Portuguese and abstracts written both in Portuguese and in English are accepted. Original research papers must follow the text structure known as IMRD: Introduction, Methods, Results and Discussion. Reports of qualitative research may have other formats, e.g., Results and Discussion in the same section followed by Final Considerations or Conclusions. Other manuscript categories (review studies, commentaries, or letters to the editor, etc.) follow text formats appropriate for them.

The research reports must be written in such a way as to allow any interested researcher to replicate the results. We thus encourage following the recommendations below according to the category of the manuscript:

- CONSORT checklist and flow chart for controlled and randomized trials;

- STARD checklist and flow chart for studies of diagnostic accuracy;

- MOOSE checklist and flow chart for meta-analyses and systematic reviews of observational studies;

- PRISMA checklist and flow chart for systematic reviews and meta-analyses;

- STROBE checklist for observational studies in epidemiology;

- RATS checklist for qualitative studies.

The items required for submission of the manuscript are detailed according to the category of the research report. To assess the occurrence of plagiarism, every manuscript is entered into a program for detecting similarities between texts. The ORCID of the  all authors must be informed in the cover letter submitted with the manuscript.  

FORM AND PREPARATION OF MANUSCRIPTS

Presentation

The text must be typed on a Microsoft Word processor or on a compatible alternative, using an A4 size page, with line spacing and font size allowing full legibility. The complete text, including the cover and reference pages, the tables, and the figure captions, must contain a maximum of 25 thousand characters with spaces.

Two files of the manuscript must be submitted; the first should contain all of the information requested in the items below and the second should be a blind copy, i.e., all information that could identify the authors or the place where the research was carried out must be excluded.

Identification data of the manuscript: Title page

Authorship: the concept of authorship applies when a person has made a substantial contribution to the design of the research project, to the analysis and interpretation of data, and to writing and the critical review of the manuscript. Inclusion of authors’ names whose contribution does not meet the aforementioned criteria is not justified.

Title in the original language of the manuscript: the title must be concise and complete, containing relevant information to enable retrieval of the article from the databases. The limit is 90 characters, including spaces.

Short title: it is the title that will appear in the article header. It must contain the essence of the subject in up to 45 characters.

Identification of authors and coauthors: these should be identified by first name and last name; institution or institutional affiliation (course, laboratory, department, hospital, clinic, university, etc.); and city, state, and country of the institution. Names are to be presented according to the order of authorship. The ORCID of all authors must be informed at the time of submission of the manuscripts, in the presentation letter.

Institution: up to three institutional hierarchies of affiliation can be included (e.g., university, school, department).

Research funding: if research was subsidized, indicate the type of aid, the name of the funding agency, and the process number.

Previous presentation: if the study was previously presented at a scientific meeting, indicate the name of the event, place, and year of the event.

Correspondence: the name, e-mail, and address of the author in charge of correspondence must be included to enable exchanges with BJGH.

Studies with humans or animals: there should be included a mention of the ethics committee approval and, in the case of clinical trials, the registration number of the Brazilian Registry of Clinical Trials-REBEC (http://www.ensaiosclinicos.gov.br) or of Clinical Trials (http://clinicaltrials.gov).

Abstract, descriptors and keywords

The second page must contain two forms of the same abstract, one in Portuguese and the other in English (maximum 250 words). The abstract must be written in a single paragraph, with maximum precision and conciseness; its content must follow the formal structure of the text, which includes the following sections: objective, methods, results and conclusion.

Each abstract is to be followed by a list of up to five descriptors and keywords (look them up in DeCS - Health Sciences Descriptors of the Lilacs Virtual Health Library (http://decs.bvs.br) and in MeSH - Medical Subject Headings from Medline (http://www.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/meshhome.html).

Text structure of the manuscript

The manuscript should be organized according to the following formal structure:

a) Introduction - justify the relevance of the study given the current state of the object under investigation and establish the objective of the article;

b) Methods – in order to enable replication of the results, describe in detail sample selection, the procedures and materials used, and the methods employed in statistical analysis;

c) Results – report the findings in a concise manner and in logical sequence, supporting them with tables and graphs as the case may be. Care must be taken not to repeat all of the data contained in the tables and/or graphs in the text;

d) Discussion - comment on the most important findings, discussing the results achieved by comparing them with those of previous studies. When applicable, address the study limitations;

e) Conclusion - summarize the findings based on the evidence.

Tables, graphs, charts, figures, and diagrams

Tables, graphs, charts, figures, and diagrams are deemed pictorial representations. No more than five of them are to be included in a manuscript. When selecting them, special care must be taken to ensure their relevance. Titles should be precise and objective for the representations to be understood on their own. The latter are to be placed at the end of the text, which should have markings to indicate the points of their insertion in the text before publication, and numbered in arabic numerals in the order of mention in the text. Any abbreviations must be spelled out in the footnote.

Figures, graphs, photographs and diagrams have the titles at the bottom, and must also be numbered in arabic numerals in the order of mention. Abbreviations and other information must be placed in the footnote after the title. Any figure (images, graphics, photographs and illustrations) must be mentioned in the text and presented in a size greater than or equal to the size intended for display (PNG or JPEG extension in a resolution above 800 pixels). If the figures have already been published, written permission for reproduction must be provided by the author / editor, and the captions must include the source of the publication.

Note: Tables, graphs, charts, figures and diagrams must be submitted in separate files without footnotes, which must be at the end of the manuscript.

Norms of scientific citation

References are to be cited in the text in the form of superscript arabic numerals, placed before any punctuation, and not enclosed by parentheses, brackets, or the like. The references should be listed consecutively according to the order of citation in the text. When a study is cited instead by means of the author’s name and year, the reference number must be placed before the author's name. If the study has two authors, their names should appear linked by ‘and.’  In cases of multiple authorship, name only the first author and follow it with “et al.”

References

References (for original articles, 40 to 50 references will be limited) must be standardized according to the Vancouver style – Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals: Writing and Editing for Biomedical Publication – and listed in order of citation. Journal titles should be referred to in an abbreviated form, according to PubMed. If a publication has up to six authors, all must be cited; over six, only the first six should be cited and followed by the Latin expression “et al.”. Whenever possible, include the DOI of the authors whose names are cited.
